PHP vs .NET – How to choose the right one.

27 November 2020

There’s been a long-standing discussion on the merits of PHP vs ASP.NET that focus on which one is better. In fact, doing a search you’ll come across many articles on this very topic.

Some online articles have a definite bias, which can leave you even more unsure of which technology is best for your project. Reading through a few of these may leave you bleary-eyed and confused, especially if you’re not very tech savvy.

That’s why we’ve created article. Here, we focus on the un-biased facts, along with the pros and cons of each technology. This is a side-by-side comparison we hope will help you make the right decision on the right technology for your needs.

The Basics

In this section, we’ll take a look at what PHP and ASP.Net are, along with their pros and cons.

What is PHP?

PHP is a server-side open source programming language used to develop web applications. It can be used for a wide range of applications including e-com, web apps, database apps, and more.

Pros:

  • Open source, which means licensing is free
  • Simple and easy to learn for beginners
  • Cross-platform
  • Highly scalable.
  • Includes advanced features that allow for professional web development
  • Connects with MySQL, Oracle, and other databases

Cons:

  • Can be sluggish, depending on the coder’s expertise
  • Not as capable when it comes to managing a large number of applications
  • Can be vulnerable to bugs caused by coding mistakes
  • Not very suitable for creating desktop applications
  • Troubleshooting and error-handling are more challenging. Issues can be caused by one small bit of code.

What is ASP.Net?

ASP.Net is also a server-side web development framework, which is written in .NET language. It supports Visual Basic.NET, JavaScript.Net, Perl, Python, and more. It’s also a great tool for creating web pages and web applications.

Pros:

  • Developed by Microsoft
  • Can be written with any .Net supported language
  • Cross-platform
  • Scalable
  • Works with all programming languages
  • Includes tools and features to support programmers
  • Open source
  • Makes it easier to add or remove features
  • Shows coding mistakes before compiling the code
  • It comes with many tools and features
  • Highly secure
  • Can connect with almost any type of database

Cons:

  • Complex performance and pages
  • Learning curve is steep
  • Only operates on Windows server
  • Has a small support community
  • Costs can quickly escalate due licensing fees
  • Not as capable when it comes to controlling HTML

PHP vs ASP.Net Features

Now, we’ll do a quick comparison of the features of PHP and ASP.Net.

When it comes to licensing, both are open source platforms. However, PHP is able to work with Linux, MAC, and Windows server OS, while ASP.Net will only work with windows.

As far as development languages, ASP.NET is able to work with VB. NET, C#/C#, .NET, and F#. When it comes to programming, PHP uses scripting, while ASP.NET uses compiled.

PHP can be used with different development tools including NetBeans, PhpStorm, and other editors. ASP.NET can be used with Visual Studio and Mono. And PHP’s syntax is similar to C and C++ languages, while ASP.NET uses visual studio or Visual Basic.

What about Market Share?

When it comes to market share, we found a huge difference between these two competitors. PHP has a larger share of the market. According to W3Techs, PHP has 79% of the market, while ASP.NET has only 9.4%.

Scalability

This is another area where both ASP.NET and PHP are about equal. When it comes right down to it, the scalability of the web app ultimately depends on the programming skills of the developer. PHP is most often chosen by small- to medium-sized business mainly because it’s easier to learn.

On the other hand, ASP.NET is used by larger organisations, but one downside is that it’s sometimes more challenging to find a developer who specialises in ASP.NET.

Cost of Development

This is where we’ve found some major differences between PHP and ASP.Net.

PHP is completely free, and can be used with Linux, MySQL server, PostgreSQL and Apache server. There are no extra charges for the additional server to work as a backup, for load distributing, or for running several servers for clustering. Hosting charges are also lower.

On the other hand, ASP.NET is also free with Windows OS. However, there are charges involved for licensing ASP.NET on a Microsoft server. In addition, the Microsoft SQL Server also has a high licensing fee. And with these platforms, upgrades will continue to result in charges on a regular basis. All of this can make ASP.Net rather challenging for small- or medium-sized businesses to afford.

Community Support

It will happen at some point that you’ll need to reach out for help. So, how does PHP stack up with ASP.Net when you require assistance?

PHP has a large community of developers; however, you can’t count that all of them have the same level of knowledge and experience with every type of network. As a result, it can be more challenging to find the help you need.

With ASP.NET, you can count on developers having the knowledge and experience needed for your project. This is because ASP.Net relies on MVC and WebAPI to keep this platform self-sufficient.

Security: Another Difference

Another difference between ASP.NET and PHP is that while both do include security options, ASP.NET has built-in security features that make it the better choice.

PHP provides the tools you need to build security features, while ASP.NET already includes these features.

Summing It Up

Both PHP and ASP.NET are evenly matched in most areas; however, you’ll need to analyse your project to see which framework is the best option.

PHP is best-suited for small- to medium-sized businesses that would like to create a small website. You won’t have to worry about incurring additional costs, and there’s a large support community if you need assistance. PHP can also be a great choice for larger businesses, but it’s best to hire a skilled programmer to avoid programming issues and other problems.

ASP.NET is best for enterprise-level websites, sites that require security compliance, and more. ASP.NET has been around a bit longer and comes with a range of features to support programmers working on large projects.
