One of Pick Everard’s recent projects, the transformation of derelict railway arches in Salford, Greater Manchester, exemplifies the firm’s multidisciplinary expertise and its commitment to urban regeneration.

The project, part of The Arch Company’s £200m ‘Project 1000’ initiative, aimed to convert vacant arches into vibrant new commercial spaces for businesses to develop and thrive .

Pick Everard was appointed to provide a full suite of engineering services, working in close partnership with design architect Stephen George + Partners (SGP) and main contractor Triton Construction .

The project required a sensitive approach to maintain the historical integrity of the existing Victorian-era structures while modernising them for contemporary commercial use. Pick Everard’s team of structural, civil, and MEP engineers collaborated to deliver a cohesive solution. This included:

Structural & Civil Engineering: Investigating the existing structures and ground conditions to develop a structural design and drainage scheme that would ensure the longevity and safety of the arches for new business occupants .

Building Services (MEP): Coordinating with utility providers for sufficient connections and designing necessary ventilation, power, and lighting solutions for the new arch fitouts .

Design Coordination: Working with SGP to ensure structural interventions were carefully coordinated to achieve the architectural design intent, incorporating high-quality materials to create an attractive and functional new "street" of arches .

The Outcome: A Foundation for Future Growth

The completion of the Salford arches project marks a significant contribution to the regeneration of the Greengate area . The scheme has successfully brought derelict spaces back into use, creating a new, vibrant destination that is anticipated to support local businesses, create jobs, and benefit the wider community .
